Porsche’s Speedster moniker was first used in 1954 for the cheaper, bare-bones 356 stripped of trimmings, luxury features, and a lower, raked windshield. Three decades later, the Speedster returned for the final year of the classic 911 body style with its 3.2 Speedster.
The 1989 Speedster, based on the standard 911 Carrera of the time, featured a raked windshield harking back to the 356 and a double-bubble rear tonneau cover heading the “emergency use only” manual roof mechanism. The vast majority of the 2,104 3.2 Speedsters sold featured the wider body of the Turbo save for 171 ‘narrow body’ examples.
Our Spotlight car is one such 1989 911 Speedster Narrow Body examples built. Finished in Silver Metallic over Black leather, this speedster is a one-owner Swedish car with approximately 43,000 miles. The car presents well with some light cracking and imperfections in the paint and a nice interior. Factory maintenance stamps are present in the booklet from new up until 2019, along with a single recent service receipt from 2023.
The market for 3.2 Speedsters has risen steadily since 2021, from an average sales price of roughly $155,000 to just over $200k today. But the market has been primarily dominated by Turbo-bodied examples, as you’d expect, due to the vast majority of Speedsters sold being equipped as such. Over the last five years, I’ve only come across two other narrow-bodied examples offered overseas and failing to sell.
Our 3.2 Speedster was also listed overseas and failed to sell at a high bid of $150,000. It’s difficult to put a number on these without seeing a sale, but the last no sale was at $267,000 for a 14k-mile car, roughly $30k over similar Turbo-bodied cars at the time. Cars with mileage similar to our Spotlight car have sold on either side of $200k over the last twelve months, so the $225,000 asking price in PCARMARKET’s Deal Tank isn’t entirely out of reach.
