Turbo 3.6 Package Cars Sells On The Second Try

Good Morning! Pretty crazy that only one car sold for more than Friday’s total dollar volume this weekend. And even without that car, we’re still over $1m in sales for a solid weekend of auction action.

As our regular readers know, when Porsche introduced the 964 Turbo in March of 1990, it still had the 3.3-liter engine out of the previous Turbo, although revised for more power and less turbo lag. It wasn’t until 1993 that the turbo version of the M64 3.6-liter flat-six was ready for prime time, but by then, the 964 was on its way out, making way for the 993.

At the end of the 1,400-unit Turbo 3.6 production run, Porsche took the remaining 93 cars they had left over and sent them off to the Exclusive Department to become Turbo S’. Of those 93 Exclusive Turbo S’, 56 were destined for the US, with 39 units receiving the Flachbau (slant-nose) X85 option and the remaining 17 keeping the standard 964-style front-end. These 17 cars became known as the “Package cars.”

This 1994 911 Turbo S 3.6 Package car is finished in Black over Black leather with Red accents and has 41,000 miles on the odometer. It’s all “X’ed” out with the X88 Turbo S Power Kit, X92 front spoiler, X93 rear spoiler, and X99 side air intakes. Being that it is a Package car, it’s missing the X85 Flachbau options.

It presents extremely well, with over 300 detailed photos showing the near-perfect Black paint and very nice interior with red accents I haven’t seen before on another car. It comes with its original window sticker, plenty of service receipts, two keys, and all books and accessories.

The market for your standard 964 Turbo 3.6 has held steady at around $335,000 over the last twelve months, with several of these cars in the $400,000 range. The top sale during this period was $494,500 for a beautiful Lavender Blue example with 31,700 miles sold at Porsche’s 75th Anniversary sale last month.

But this obviously isn’t your ordinary 964. The only two comps we have for Package cars are an 8,700-mile example that brought $1,265,000 in December 2022 and a 40,900-mile example that failed to sell at a high bid of $875,00 in November, which just so happens to be this same car. It looks like a little patience has paid off for buyers, as the new owner bought it at a $75k discount to its last auction’s high bid, making me lean more towards well-bought.
