GT3 Cup cars are racecars developed for the Porsche Supercup Series and are based on the current generation of GT3 in dealer showrooms. For the 991 series, we saw a big upgrade from the previous generation with revised aero and chassis as well as a 3.8-liter race-spec engine mated to a pneumatically activated six-speed developed specifically for the track. The largest change to the .2 generation 991 Cup car was an enlarged 4.0-liter engine putting out 479hp.

Cup cars do tend to change hands quite often but not typically on online auction platforms. In the last five years, ONE US spec 991.1 Cup car and ZERO 991.2 Cup cars have managed to sell at auction. Being race cars limits the buyer pool for sure with most auctions resulting in too few bids and a meager amount of comments.

Our Spotlight car, the 2018 991.2 Cup Car pictured above, has roughly 3,400 miles and was serviced by the seller in January of this year. These are fairly stout cars so no major mechanical rebuilds have been required with this mileage. The car presented extremely well and for a race car, only has signs of paintwork on the driver’s door.

The single 991.1 Cup car to sell sold for $120,210 back in September of last year and the recent 991.2 Cup car high bid was $280,000 for a 7,500-mile example in October. Our Car sold over the weekend for $172,000 and included a second set of wheels and tires and an offer for some track time at The Thermal Club if the new owner picked the car up there.

While we don’t have much of a subset of sales to gauge whether this was a “deal” or not, it at least sets the market for future cars to come. And with an MSRP of a little over $200,000, I’d say the seller got their money’s worth in track time for the difference in price.
