It’s been a hot minute since we’ve taken a look at the 993 Carrera 4S market, and with the sale of this 1997 911 Carrera 4S 6-Speed on the low side, I feel it’s time to dive in and see if the market has turned for one of the most popular final air-cooled models.
For those that need a refresher on what makes a 993 C4S so special, it shares the wider bodywork of the 993 Turbo as well as the 18” Turbo wheel design and has a slightly lowered suspension compared to the standard Carrera models. Basically, the sexiest 993 produced. Those hips!
Our Spotlight car is finished in Black over Cashmere Beige and is optioned with Porsche’s Aerokit adding front and rear spoilers as well as optional Subble Leather Seats and Motor Sound Package which adds a revised airbox and louder mufflers. Over the last 8 years of ownership, the owner has only driven the car for 1,000 miles giving it a total of 68k on the odometer and although it was seldom driven, it was very well maintained as can be seen by the stack of service records.
It sold yesterday on PCARMARKET at a final bid of $114,000, which is about $10,000 under the market for the mileage. So is this an indication of market direction? I don’t think so. When you dig into the listing there are a few items that would lower the value in my book.
First, the car has aftermarket HID headlights. Although they might be better than standard ‘90s Porsche headlights, they just don’t fit the car. Also, there is paintwork noted in the listing on the front hood and right front fender. Now the hood can always be explained away as painted due to stone chips. But the painted fender needed to be addressed, perhaps with close-up pictures of the bolts holding the fender on for any signs of removal or replacement. And finally, the black paint could have used a paint correction because, well, black paint.
Had those items been addressed I believe there was another $20k in this car due to the Aerokit and Motor Sound Package. Two options not regularly found on your average 993 C4S. Well-bought here.
