Modified 1970 914/6

A wonderfully modified sixer, and one of BaT's first sales.

Before becoming the auction site we all know and love, Bring a Trailer was a daily email of interesting cars for sale on other platforms. In 2011, BaT tried their hand at selling cars through a listing service called “BaT Exclusive,” and that’s where we first saw this 1970 914-6.

Delivered new in Signal Orange, this 914 was went through an extensive restoration with new steel panels from Restoration Design fitted along with a factory GT stiffening kit and factory steel GT fender flares. Other rust spots were repaired and the car was repainted in Orange with Back rockers. On the inside, the cabin features GTS Classic buckets in Black with Houndstooth inserts along with a MOMO Prototipo steering wheel and VDO gauges.

Out back you’ll find a 911S flat-six with displacement increased to 2.7-liters and plenty of work completed in 2021 including rebuilding the fuel injection pump and replacing the engine distributor drive gear, timing chains, camshafts, oil cooler, bearings, and thermostat. The spark plugs and fuel injectors were replaced in 2022 and the engine distributor drive gear was replaced (again) in 2024. Included with the car are plenty of spare parts and its original factory engine. Lots to love about this one.

The 914/6 market peaked at the end of 2022, beginning of 2023, when we saw a number of cars sell for over $100,000. Prices appeared to decline through 2024 until we saw a couple of new sales over $100k with a five year high of $173,600* in August. While our Spotlight car isn’t a perfectly restored example, it does at least have its original engine and has factory steel GT components, as most modified cars feature aftermarket components. I for one expected it to crest the $100k mark, but unfortunately it failed to sell at a final bid of $80,000. Better luck next time.
