It’s not every day that one of the rarest and most historic racing 911s comes up for sale and when they do, it’s usually at a legacy auction house coinciding with a concours d’elegance. But this 1970 911 S/T ended yesterday on PCARMARKET at a high bid of $385,000, a far cry from its current “Buy Now” price of $625,000. So, was the high bid all the money for this car or should someone step up and close this sale at the asking price?
Depending on who you ask, Porsche built between 33 to 43 911 S/Ts in the early ‘70s to meet new FIA regulations to go racing in such events as the Sebring 12 Hours, Targa Florio, and Daytona. The S/T was quite successful racking up wins around the world, making it one of the greatest 911s most have never heard of… until Porsche releases the new 992 911 ST this summer.
This particular example is finished in Silver Metallic and comes off of a 2017 restoration where it was featured at the Jay Peak Porsche Parade that year. The car features matching numbers and still appears to be in perfect post-restoration condition from the photos in the gallery.
Putting a price on an S/T like this one is difficult as not a single car has sold over the past 5 years. All examples that have come up at auction have failed to find new homes, in fact, we’ve even seen this example fail to sell before at Gooding’s Amelia Island sale back in 2017.
Back then the estimate was $750,000-900,000, so the seller’s asking price of $625k doesn’t sound so unreasonable. But without any sales data, this one is a tough call. You would think that a collector getting ready to plop down a deposit on the forthcoming 992 ST would want to have one of these alongside. I know I would.
