Built in collaboration with VW as Porsches replacement for the entry-level 912, the 914 became Porsche’s top seller between its launch in 1969 and 1976. With over 100,000 units produced worldwide, there is no drought in 914 availability although finding one in excellent condition is getting harder and harder as they were prone to rust and spent much of their lives as just “used cars”.
Such a variation in condition brings quite a variation in price. 2.0-liter 914s can be had for as little as $10,000 and as much as $60,000+ with cars near the low end of the market being projects needing lots of work and those near the upper end of the market well-kept and often restored examples.
Our Spotlight car, a final-year 1976 914 2.0 finished in its original color combination of Malaga Red over White leatherette was refurbished by the 914 experts at Auto Atlanta. At the time of the refurbishment, rust damage was addressed along with electrical repairs, weatherstripping replacement, and lighting issues. The engine was also refreshed during this time and the sale includes invoices for over $75,000 in work done at Auto Atlanta between 2019 and 2022.
This 914 sold near the top of the range at $51,000 yesterday on Bring a Trailer, much less than the sum of its parts and invoices over the last five years. It truly was a labor of love as the seller spent what was needed to keep this 914 in tip-top shape and now the buyer has an excellent car at a market-correct price. Well bought.
