The thing about Porsche 914s is they made a ton of them, and I mean a TON of them, about 119,000. This, and the fact that many considered the 914 a VW kept prices fairly low at the bottom of classic car prices for decades. But eventually, like all things Porsche, even these caught the bug, and prices began to rise in the mid-2010s. Still, early 4-cylinder cars can be had for about $25,000, with a low of around $10,000 for your rather rough driver cars.
This original-owner 1972 914 falls into the nicer driver category, having been repainted at some point in its original Bahia Red and an engine rebuild in the mid-2000s at 100,000 miles. During that rebuild, Webber carbs were added to the engine along with an aftermarket exhaust which required the removal of the rear valence to fit. Both the rear valence and original fuel injection system are included with the purchase.
The car was optioned with the Appearance Group adding the sleek chrome bumpers and fog lights and features aftermarket Fuchs-style wheels. The Black vinyl interior is all original down to the manual adjustable 3-point safety belts.
All-in-all, this is a very nice driver-quality 1.7-liter car with some slight modifications. I, for one, thought we’d see a tad over $20,000, closer to the average we’ve seen over the past twelve months. It hammered down, however, at $18,250, making this quite the buy. If it were me, the only thing I’d do is add a set of original wheels, as I prefer that look, and call it a day. A fun little car for under $20,000.
