A Stolen PTS 930 Turbo

Good Morning! Another rainy day here in the Northeast. Boy, do I miss that Southern California weather right about now. But the rain clouds seem to have cleared from the market as Tuesday popped with an above-average sell-through rate and dollar volume off of only 21 cars.

Sometimes I get them right, and sometimes I get them wrong. In the case of this 1986 911 Turbo Coupe, it would be the latter. We touched on 930 Turbos last week with a number of decent sales, and when I saw today’s Spotlight car go live, I knew we had a winner as this one not only had a great story but was in a special color combination and had only 38,000 miles.

This 930 Turbo was delivered new to Vasek Polak Porsche-Audi of Hermosa Beach, California, and was purchased by the second owner almost immediately after the first in 1986. The second owner kept the car until he sold it to a collector friend in 1994 and then repurchased it back from said collector in 2003, so the history of the car is well-known and documented by the seller.

Color-wise, the car is a rare Paint to Sample car finished in Meteor Metallic. Remember, while PTS cars are common these days, back in the ‘80s, it wasn’t an option you saw often. The chances of finding another PTS 930 are slim, making this one special. Inside you’ll find Burgundy leather, another rarity for the year, as most interiors we see are Black or some form of Tan.

Average pricing for 930s over the last twelve months has been $142,000, but based on mileage alone, $160-200k or higher wouldn’t be out of the question for this example as we’ve seen peaks in the mileage range upwards of $250k. However, it sold yesterday on PCARMARKET for $145,000.

Why so low? For one, the presentation was lacking. The seller included only about 100 pictures of the car and lacked paint meter readings. Also, no documentation was found in the pictures for a car with such a known history. I’ll also admit that the interior color might not be for everyone, but one would think something other than Black or Tan would help bring the bids.

Based on last week’s sales, we know that the 930 market is still healthy and shows no signs of slowing. So at $145,000, this Turbo was very well bought. Congrats to the new owner on stealing this one.
