A market high for a final-year 964
Good Morning! You know how you don’t really feel like working much the Tuesday after a long weekend of fun and sun? Well, that’s pretty much how buyers felt as only 50% of the 28 auctions ending after Memorial Day weekend sold. What’s even more surprising is that only 23% of cars over $100k found new homes. Hopefully, the hangover wears off today.

For 1994 it was out with the old and in with the new as the 993 replaced the short-lived 964 which began manufacture in 1989 as a 1990 model. 85% new compared to the 911 it replaced, the 964 still kept the same classic shape and is considered by many to be the last of the “classically proportioned” 911s.
Today’s Spotlight car, this final year 1994 911 Coupe is finished in Amazon Green Metallic over Beige Leather, features a 5-speed manual transmission, and has just shy of 120,000 miles on the odometer. The car comes fitted with an aftermarket suspension and 17” Fuchs-style wheels. The car also comes with plenty of service records with a big one showing an engine rebuild in 2021 to the tune of about $24,000.
There are plenty of pictures of the car inside and out but none with paint meter readings, and no mention in the listing as to the originality of the paint. Based on miles and photographs, one would think that this car was repainted at some point as it shows much better than it should for the mileage, especially when you compare it to the engine bay and undercarriage of the car. When asked about the paint in the comment section the seller stated “There are no signs that the car has been repainted, but I have only owned it for a few years”, which to me means that they don’t really know.
But the question of paint or no paint didn’t matter in the end as the car sold for a remarkable price of $123,000. Yes, 964s have been on the up and up recently while the rest of the market has started to even out, but $123k for 120k miles is about $23k over what one would have expected for this auction as only one other car over 100,000 miles has sold for over $100,000 this year.
What the buyer got for their money was a nice, rare shade, a final-year example of a great car with an engine rebuild making for a solid ownership experience from here on out. Kudos to the seller for maintaining the heck out of this thing but just think of what could have been had they addressed the paint question properly.
