A New Record For A 987 Boxster S
Good Morning! You know it’s going to be a big day when the top four sales combine for over $1m. Not bad for a Monday. But the one sale to stop me in my tracks wasn’t the highest for the day. More on that one below.

Every once in a blue moon, while scrolling through the day’s completed listings, a number and the car picture associated with the said number just don’t add up and cause a pause in my nightly Porsche price assessment. Such was the case as I scrolled down to this 987 Porsche Boxster S.
Now, don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful car and it’s photographed and presented extremely well. With only 13,000 miles, the Guards Red Paint is near perfect and meters evenly with no signs of paintwork in the provided paint meter images. The undercarriage is clean as can be and the Black interior and Black soft-top look fantastic, as they should for the mileage.
The market for Boxsters has been fairly consistent with prices ranging between mid-$20s to $40,000 with the occasional outlier, one being a 2008 Boxster S Limited Edition 6-Speed that sold for $44,444 back in December of last year. So, you can imagine that when I saw the sales price of $52,000 my brain went “does not compute”.
But when you really dig into the numbers, this sale does make sense. First off, being a 2009 means that this Boxster S is a 987.2, which wasn’t just a facelift. In fact, Porsche introduced a brand-new engine for the 987.2 increasing the horsepower in the Boxster S from 295 to 310. Plus, 987.2s are not as common. In fact, only 12 of the 987.2 Boxster S’ have sold in the last five years compared to 95 first-generation cars making the higher horsepower variant rarer and more desired.
Couple those two items with the lowest mileage we’ve seen, and you start to find the price paid quite reasonable. Still, I’m on the fence as to whether this was well-sold or well-bought. There are a couple of other cars in that price range that I’d rather drive for the weekend which is most likely clouding my judgment. 🤔
