Turbo Tuesday
Good Morning! Hope you enjoyed the long weekend behind the wheel, I know I did. While the stats for the weekend look sold at $1.6m in dollar volume and a sell-through rate of 73%, the weekend vs. Monday was quite lopsided with only 10 auctions ending yesterday for a total dollar volume of $388k and a 60% sell-through rate. Maybe BaT should take Memorial Day off next year.

While the standard 996 received a lot of flak for its water-cooled engine, the 996 Turbo on the other hand was a hit right out of the box due in part to its 3.6-liter flat-six derived from the 1998 Le Mans winning 911 GT1 race car. In standard form, the 996 Turbo produced 414 hp, but if one ticked the extra-special X50 box, they received an engine upgraded with larger turbochargers, intercoolers, and a revised ECU producing a whopping 444 hp.
X50 Turbos typically trade at a premium compared to standard Turbos, sometimes to the tune of over $10,000. Throw in a rare color and that premium can be as high as $30,000. Although not a rare color, today’s Spotlight car, this 2002 911 Turbo Coupe 6-Speed, is a factory-equipped X50 example.
Finished in Arctic Silver over Black Leather, this X50 has been modified with 18” BBS Wheels, a JL Audio Amplifier, an aftermarket rear speaker shelf, a Valentine radar detector, and a DK Links dash cam. With over 100,000 miles on the odometer, some might say run. But with the almost bullet-proof Mezger engine, and plenty of service records, I for one wouldn’t even blink.
It sold yesterday for $45,000. When looking at comps over 100k, the majority of cars are non-X50 examples save for one, a 115,000-mile example that sold for $53,496 in August of last year. Maybe it was the mileage, maybe it was the fact that the auction ended on a holiday, whatever the case, the buyer absolutely stole this X50. Very well bought here with not much to lose as you pile on more miles.
