The Boxster Mileage Conundrum
Good Morning! Friday was tough to follow as our weekend action fell shy of $1m again, but at least our sell-through rate jumped back into the 70s. But today should prove interesting as cars from the Gruppe P Collection Part II close with a 1966 906 leading the pack at a current high bid of $1.2m. Get your popcorn ready!

986 Porsche Boxsters have an interesting price variation as you can find examples with as high as 68,000 miles for mid $20s and 5,000-mile examples for mid $20s like this 1997 Boxster 5-Speed that brought $25,500 over the weekend. What gives?
Launched in 1997, the original Boxsters were fitted with a 2.5-liter version of Porsche’s M96 flat-6. This engine proved to have several failures resulting in cracked cylinder liners. These issues caused Porsche to redesign the engine in 1999, bumping the size to 2.7 liters for 2000 and beyond. Looks-wise, the Boxster remained relatively steady throughout its run, with a slight facelift in 2002 and a new glass rear window with a heating element.
These improvements are reflected in the price paid. Those examples with higher mileage selling for the mid-$20s are mostly later model cars with larger, improved engines, proving that mileage isn’t everything for some Porsches.
It makes me wonder, though. What would a 5,000-mile 2002 Boxster bring in today’s market? The last time we saw one was over a year ago when a Yellow example sold for just over $28k. But we all know that Yellow is always softer. Would $30k be out of the question?
