When you think about rare cars, the 981 Boxster Spyder typically doesn’t come to mind. But the open-top version of Porsche’s mid-engine lightweight performance cars was fairly limited when you consider the production numbers of other highly sought-after cars. With only 2,486 total units produced and only 829 brought to North America, these should be considered whenever we’re talking about modern Porsche collectibles.
To add to the rarity, our Spotlight car, the 2016 Boxster Spyder pictured above is finished in Paint-to-Sample Mexico Blue over Black Leather and Alcantara and has only 3,000 miles. While I’m not sure how many PTS 981 Spyders were produced, I’m willing to bet it was less than 100, and even then, this is probably one of a handful finished in such a stunning heritage color.
The seller presented the car beautifully with plenty of pictures, paint meter readings, service invoices, and all factory literature as you would expect for such a low mileage one-owner car and they were rewarded with a new 5-year high sale at $120,000.
Yes, well sold for sure, but I believe this car was also well bought. The color, mileage, 6-speed, and production numbers will always add value, but the fact that the Boxster is ending the 718 series in the next few years and going all-electric makes me think it’s time to buy before they really start to take off.
