This Rare 993 Brought All The Money

Good Morning! 31 is quite the number of cars on offer for a Thursday. One would have thought that the number was pushed up due to Mecum’s Kissimmee auction starting, but the majority of Porsches on offer by the auction house doesn’t hit until today and tomorrow.

Speaking of Mecum, I’ll be at their Harrisburgh auction later this month, so if you’re planning on attending, reach out!

If any car deserves the hashtag #RareShades, it’s this 1997 911 Carrera S Coupe Vesuvio Edition 6-Speed. The Vesuvio Edition was a Rest of the World (RoW) 993 limited to just 60 units and equipped with 18” hollow-spoke “Technology” wheels with Steel Gray centers and Steel Gray mirrors and was the last act for Porsche’s 993.

Based on the Carrera S, the Vesuvio Edition is named as such for the Purplish-Gray color and features the S’ wider Turbo bodywork and lowered suspension. This example features Black leather Sport Seats, a Sunroof, and Hi-Fi Stereo. It currently shows 108,000 miles and is in very nice condition, according to the photographs, although no mention of paintwork or paint meter readings is present in the listing.

The marker for 993 Carrera S’ has jumped since July 2022 when the average price was hovering right around $100,000. Two years on, our average 993 Carrera S sells for just a tad over $140k, although it is common to see a car over $200k.

Our Spotlight car sold at a high bid of $173,000, setting a new high mark for cars with over 100,000 miles and $40,000 more than the next closest comp. For such a rare shade, the car is deserving of the price paid here, and both seller and buyer should be happy with the price achieved. I just wonder if we would have had a new 5-year record had this car had less than 70k miles. I’m sure there is one out there.
