Finished in its original color combination of Tangerine over Black leatherette, the 1968 911S Coupe pictured above is a stunning numbers-matching example sporting 40 years of continuous ownership and a meticulous restoration performed by marque specialists in 2017.

Even at this caliber, the $200-$250,000 estimate seemed a bit optimistic as final-year SWB Coupes have been trading hands in the $100-150,000 range over the last five years with a high sale of $225,000 in August of 2020 for a White over Black RHD example in the UK.

But like other sections of the Porsche market this weekend, high sales were meant to be broken as our Spotlight car sold SWB Targa S money at $262,500 before premium at RM Sotheby’s. But unlike our 914/6 from Thursday, this 911 deserved the price paid as the condition of the work completed 6 years ago looked as fresh as it probably did the day it was completed.

Yes, the car we very well-sold, but the buyer spent the money to buy the best. You couldn’t buy the cheapest S sold in the last five years and restore it to this level for close to the price paid. Well-bought as well.
