This or That?

Would you rather… a one-off recreation of a car Porsche used primarily for hill climbs, or a 944 for your track day toy? That’s the question bidders were probably asking themselves as the final minutes of this custom-built 909 Bergspyder replica counted down yesterday before selling for $15,250.

Built in the ’80s for SCCA Class C racing, our spotlight car has a fiberglass body over a tube frame body and is powered by a 2.2L tuned 914 engine. Minimal power, but minimal weight, make this an intriguing proposition for possible SVRA or HSR vintage racing.

But for that kind of money, you could also look at a purpose-built 944 track car which has been selling in the $10,000 and up range. More power, but also more weight, and eligible for a few more events and 944-only fields.

On the other hand, in the Bergspyder you’re sure to be the only one on the track day. And that right there is why at $15,250, I think it is a good buy. Well-bought for a ton of fun and a toy that didn’t cost an arm and a leg.
