A Once-In-A-Decade 930 Turbo Sale

What we have here is the first 930 Turbo Slant Nose to hit $300,000 since a 2,000-mile example sold at Porsche 70th Anniversary sale 5 years ago. That example, while low mileage, wasn’t as special as this 1986 911 Turbo Slant Nose Coupe that sold yesterday on Bring a Trailer for $300,000. So I’m just going to come out and say it now, this 930 Turbo was well-bought even though it had slightly more miles at 3,600. And here’s why.

In 1982 Tag Heuer co-owner Mansour Ojjeh, also of McLaren F1 fame, commissioned Porsche to develop a road-going version of their 935 Slant Nose race car using a 930 Turbo body and 935 body panels. The car became immediately famous within Porsche circles and other well-heeled Porsche VIPs began to demand a similar car from the factory.

In order to meet the demand, buyers worked with Porsche’s Sonderwunschprogramm, or Special Wishes Program, to commission their own BEFORE it became a factory option known as the M505 Flachbau which debuted in 1987. Roughly 250 Special Wishes Slant Noses were produced compared to the 600 or so factory M505s making these cars rare. And this is one of those cars.

With the average price of 930 M505 Coupes at just shy of $200,000 and lower mileage examples selling between $250,000 and $290,000, this very special pre-M505 Special Wishes 930 with 3,600 miles is an absolute steal at $300,000. I don’t know when another example such as this will come to market, but I’m willing to bet we’ll look back on this sale and agree.
