A Ruf Day In The Market
This 1991 Ruf modified 3.8 Turbo was sold yesterday on PCARMARKET for $153,964. At first glance, on the softer side for Ruf-modified Porsches but at 100,000 miles, was this the correct price, or was money left on the table?
The car was purchased by the current owner in 1993 with just over 4,000 miles and converted into BTR specification three years later. More modifications and tuning ensued on a trip to Pfaffenhausen in 1998 and much maintenance has been completed on the car over the decades of ownership.
What we have here is a well-maintained, higher mileage car that shows signs of use, not abuse, modified by one of, if not the, most respected tuners in the Porsche world. To recreate this car, you’d first have to start with a 100,000-mile 964 Turbo that in today’s market, sits just above the $100,000 mark for a well-maintained example.
Next, you’d have to ditch the standard 3.3-liter engine and install a Ruf-built 3.8-liter BTR spec engine along with Ruf’s 6-speed transmission. And if you think that this work along with tuning could be done for south of another $100,000, you’d be sorely mistaken. And since we’re well above the hammer price already on this one, I’m not going to add up the extra bits.
At the end of the day, the buyer got a bargain of a car that they can enjoy without hesitation or worry about dinging the value with another minor scratch or a few more miles.
