A Sub $100k 2.7 RS
After writing about market highs and market lows over the past few years for Porsche’s original homologation special, I wanted to do some digging and see where these were only a few decades ago for today’s Flashback Friday.
This 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 RS Touring was a “top result” and “retail-ready” finished in Primrose over Black with matching numbers all around. A prime example that would fetch $500,000 on a bad day in today’s market.
But this was 2001. We had just come off the back half of the dot-com bubble bursting and a few months after the tragic events of September 11th. Not the strongest time for the car market but too dissimilar to where we might find ourselves in a year’s time if economic conditions continue to deteriorate.
So how much did this RS bring at Bonhams back in December of 2001? This yellow beauty hammered down at $48,990. A far cry from today’s $500-600,000 estimates.
But would you have made out better investing that $48,990 in the market or buying this 2.7 RS? Well had you invested that money in the Dow, it would only be worth a measly $177,638 today.
