A Tale of Two 914s

The older a car gets, the further we see a spread in prices based on condition more so than mileage. Case in point, two 1974 Porsche 914 2.0s that both ended yesterday on Bring a Trailer with one bringing $36,000 and one ending with a high bid of $8,000.

Our Spotlight car, the Yellow example pictured above has 67,000 miles since new, all driven by the same family. The yellow re-spray is in decent condition, and the interior has a few minor niggles, but overall a fairly solid car. After 37 bids and 101 comments, this 914 found a new home at $36,000 amid cheers from the selling family.

The other 914 on offer yesterday was a white example showing 64,000 miles. It was purchased by the seller earlier this year and sported an “interesting” interior choice as well as a few new bits and bobs to get her ready for sale. Plenty of surface rust, a bit of oil leaking, and a trick starting sequence let us know that this car would be a fun driver but far from a full restoration candidate. The seller did a very good job of documenting the car for what it was and representing it. But at the end of the day, after 25 bids and 37 comments, she’s staying home.

I’m sure the high bidder wasn’t too far off the reserve of the White car, hopefully, they can come to an agreement with the seller and the car will live to drive another day. As far as our Yellow car goes, both sides should be very pleased with the buyer getting a great example with full history to enjoy and the selling family getting a decent pay-day and the knowledge that the next custodian will love the car as much as they have. Well done by both parties.
