Do Replicas Replicate The Hot Market?
Few cars have been replicated more than Porsche’s venable 356 Speedster. Sure, 550 Spyder replicas and the occasional 904 replicas hit the market, but not with the regularity and frequency of the 356.
In the past year alone, 95 replicas have come to market commanding anywhere from a low of around $30,000 to upwards of $60,000 and sell-through at a rate of 80%. While year and mileage play less of a part in the price difference of the cars, the disparity seems to be driven by the manufacturer.
356 Speedsters by Vintage Speedsters like our Spotlight car tend to command higher prices at auction while Speedsters built from CMC and a few now-defunct manufacturers can be had in the $30,000 range.
And while a rising tide lifts all boats, 356 replicas have held fairly steady over the past year with the pandemic bringing a much larger supply to market than in previous years and a demand that seems to be satisfied.
