How Much Value Does Celebrity Bring?

A centerpiece of any Porsche collection, the 1973 Porsche 911 2.7 RS was the marque’s first successful homologation special that set the tone for Porsche’s racing cars throughout the decades.

Absent sales as of late, the only other 2.7 RS to sell this year found a new home at a staggering price of $975,000, over $100,000 more than the average 2021 sale price which was at a low over the last 5 years.

But was this previous sale an indication of where the market is in 2022 or was it an outlier due to its famous previous owner?

This 1973 RS sold at Mecum’s Monterey sale in August amid much fanfare. The car was part of the AE Collection of the late Paul Walker and Roger Rodas who tragically lost their lives in a much-publicized Carrera GT crash in 2013. The car itself was your typical Touring trim so it’s safe to say that the celebrity provenance helped push the bid to its high sale. But by how much?

Our Spotlight car, being auctioned by RM Sotheby’s at their London sale on November 5th, is also a Touring model fitted for racing and offered with a Certified by FIA Historic Technical Passport. It’s tough to gauge how this car will fair in this economic climate but we’ll see where the market truly stands for this Porsche icon in a little over a week’s time.
