Let’s Play a Game

Name a car that you can drive over 100,000 miles and then sell for over its original MSRP.

To answer the question above, that car would be a 1997 993 Carrera S in Speed Yellow.

In preparing for today’s market letter, I had to do a double take when I saw the price and then mileage for today’s Spotlight car: 116,000 miles and $118,000. It must be modded by Ruf. Nope. Famous owner? Nope. 8 kilos of cocaine stuffed in the fenders? Nope.

Just a normal run of the mill low production widebody air-cooled 911 in an excellent color combo and yellow seatbelts before colored seatbelts were cool. So what gives?

When looking at past sales, we have a car with close to 200,000 miles that sold for a hair less than $100k. And then earlier this year a 91,000-mile car sold for $108,000. For two bidders to get into a tussle gunning for a very well-maintained car in a not-so-ordinary color and pay top dollar is not so far-fetched. But at $118,000 with that kind of mileage, we have to call this one very well-sold.
