Reimagining Adds $1m Instantly These Days
While every car that sold at RM Sotheby’s Miami sale Saturday night seemed like a high mark for a model, keep in mind that each car offered was a super-low mileage #1 collector quality car. That being said, the sale of the 1988 959SC Reimagined by Canepa for an unbelievable $2.9m was fairly shocking, even though it didn’t quite hit RM’s low estimate.
So what exactly is a “reimagined” 959? Well, take the 80s 959, nearly double the horsepower to 825, completely rework the suspension for superior handling, add 18-inch magnesium hollow-spoke wheels, and trim the vehicle in any color combination you can imagine. The result is a car that’s worth $1m more than your standard 959.
It seems tagging the word reimagined onto anything these days produces a seven-figure result. But that’s just what you’ll have to pay for the engineering expertise of the man who knows Porsche’s original supercar better than anyone else on the planet.
I’d imagine the seller paid less than his sales price for 959SC #003. Assuming that, this special car was well sold for sure.
